The
abode of Bliss and Blessings, Golden temple is holiest of the shrines of Sikh
religion. It is also known as Darbar Sahib the Court Divine. Actually known as
Hari Mandir (the Temple of God), it is the ardent desire of every devout Sikh
to pay at least one visit to the Golden Temple and offer obeisance.
Surrounded
by the pool which gave the town its name "Amritsar", GoldenTemple is open to all
and is reached by a causeway.The temple beautifully reflected in stunning expanse
of water, creates an atmosphere which is particularly powerful from before dawn
to early light.
JALLIAN
WALA MEMORIAL
Na vakil, no appeal,
no dallel, " this is how the Indian people, more particularly the Punjabis,
denounced the Rowlatt Act which , from all accounts, was the root-cause of the
Unrest that led to the ignoble massacre of Jallianwala Bagh.
In
1919, The Jallianwala Bagh was no "garden but a desolate piece of land- a
rectangle of irregular shape, about 229 meters long and 13 meters wide. The 'Flame
of liberty' was constructed in 1954 and inaugurated by the President, Dr Rajindra
Parsad in 1961.
On the four sides of the memorial, the
words, "In memory of martyrs - 13 April, 1919" has been inscribed in
Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu and English.
DURGIANA
TEMPLE
This Hindu temple also draws
its share of visitors .The temple is dedicated to goddess Durga and dates back
to 16th century. A large temple is dedicated to Hindu deities Laxmi ( The Goddess
of wealth ) and Narayan. ( The Preserver of Universe ). All dignitaries visiting
Golden Temple make it a point to visit Durgiana Temple also.
Situated
outside the Hathi Gate Durgiana Mandir is largest Hindu Temple in the city. A
famous Hindu Shrine it was founded by Lala Nathu Mal Rangwala and Guru Sahai Mal
in 1921. There are other temples Durga Mata Mandir, Hanuman Mandir, Bairon Mandir
inside the Complex. Shri Ram Nassen of Lahore in 1905 constructed a Sarover. In
1921 a bridge measring 250 feet is length and 181/2 feet is width was constructed
to reach the major shrine adoring the idols of Shri Laxmi Narayan, Sita and Ram,
Radha and Krishna. These idols are beautifull draped and profusely ornamented.

If
the Golden temple of Amritsar is the star attraction for every visitor from outside
the State, another interesting place to which the people make it a point to visit
is the joint Indo-Pak checkpost at the border, 30 Kilometers from Amritsar.
From
Amritsar 5 Km on the road to Lahore (Pakistan), is India-Pakistan border,which
is also known as " Attari (India)- "Wagah " (Pakistan) border. A visit to the
border is an interesting experience, especially at sun-set, when the retreat ceremony
takes place between the Indian and Pakistani Bordern personals putting up a well
co-ordinated and spectacular display.
